Families planning on visiting Barcelona for their holiday can take advantage of the various theme parks located in and around the city. They make for an awesome vacation destination for tourists of any age, and with many different options to choose from, most will struggle to decide on which one to visit first!
Here’s a breakdown of some of the top theme parks in Barcelona worth visiting:
The undoubted crown jewel of all of the theme parks found in not only Barcelona, but all of Spain, Port Aventura sees millions of visitors each year and is one of the most visited theme parks in Europe. There is much to do in this theme park, which is only an hour’s drive from the city itself, yet with two hotels found in the park, many enjoy staying in Port Aventura itself. The park is home to dozens of rides, all based on the various themed sections of the park. There are six areas in total, all home too many great sites and attractions, providing endless entertainment for people of all ages. These areas include:
This area is based around the local towns and villages found along the coasts of the Mediterranean, aiming to capture the beauty of a quaint and charming fishing village. As the first section of the park as you enter, it gives a great feel for the amazing attractions to be found in Port Aventura. It’s perfect for tasting local cuisine, and thrill seekers will enjoy taking a ride on Furios Baco – the fastest roller-coaster in all of Spain!
This area follows a theme of tropical islands, as inspired by the real life Polynesian Islands. This tropical paradise has plenty of fun rides, great music, amazing exotic food and drink, as well as many other sights worth checking out, such as a special 4D ride.
Inspired by colonial China, this area of the park as a lot to offer for people of all ages. Younger children will enjoy the specially designed children’s area, which features rides perfect for children. Dancers, acrobats and other shows and performances offer a great show for anyone passing through, and the impressive rides will also appeal to thrill-seekers, including Shambhala and Dragon Kahn.
With its jungle-like vegetation and crumbling Mayan ruins, visitors can expect to be transported back to colonial Mexico when visiting this area of the park. The shops, rides, shows and cuisine all follow the theme of colonial Mexico, and offer plenty of diversity for visitors. Rides worth checking out include the Hurakan Condor, or you can catch all of the attractions riding the mine train known as El Diablo, or even let the little ones take a pony ride through the park. Yucatan offers something a little faster and wilder for the older visitors, but young ones will enjoy the Los Armadilos, with it being a replica of Yucatan especially for kids.
The Far West is all about the American Wild West. Rides found here take inspiration from all things American, with the likes of Buffalo Rodeo, Crazy Barrels and a good old fashioned Carrousel. Big attractions in this area include the wooden roller coasters Stampida and Tomahawk. As well as the Grand Canyon Rapids Country music, classic American cuisine, cowboys, cancan shows – Far West has everything you could need to relive the glory days of the wild west whilst visiting Port Aventura!
While each area of the park has ample fun for children, nothing will compare to the magic they can find at Seasmo Aventura, which is the smallest and newest area of the park, and is based around Sesame Street! There is even a kid-friendly roller coaster too! The rides, shops, and restaurants here are therefore specifically targeted towards the young children visiting, and they can meet all of their favourite characters too, including Big Bird, Elmo, Bert and Ernie, and many more!
Costa Craibe Aquatic Park
The newly opened water park is one of the newest attractions opened in Port Aventura in recent years, and has specially designed attractions for both children and adults. You can find child-friendly pools, a pirate ship housing many sesame street characters, and a water jet pool for adults who want to relax whilst their children play – it’s connected to the kid’s pools so you can watch the little ones! Adults and older kids will find plenty of fun in the numerous water slides, including the incredible 31 meter high waterslide, the highest in all of Europe!
Another new addition coming soon to Port Aventura is Ferrari Land. Based around the famous car manufacturer, this section of the park aims to attract the adrenaline seekers as well as families looking out for a fun outing. The rides will take inspiration from Ferrari itself along with Italy, the birthplace of the iconic car. Restaurants and shops will follow these themes, but the biggest attraction will unquestionably be the new roller coaster opening in Ferrari Land. This will be the tallest in Europe measuring in at 112 meters and features a vertical accelerator that aims to mimic reaching a speed of 180km/h in only 5 seconds – not one for the faint of heart!
All in all, this abundance of attractions makes Port Aventura one of the must-see theme parks not just in Barcelona, but all of Spain! You have everything you will need for families of any size and scope, providing destination that can cater to so many different tastes.
